Series: 5-day Nutrition Workshops for Grades K-8

Learn Nutrition Science workshops each contain five sequential lessons that build on each other helping students deepen their understanding of nutrition concepts and become competent healthy eaters.

A Garden Plot

Kindergarten

There are stories to be told in every garden! In A Garden Plot workshop students discover the fruit and vegetable garden through the classical tale of Peter Rabbit. Students work together to make healthy recipes inspired by bunnies as they learn the importance of making healthy food and drink choices and will leave this workshop excited about eating more fruits and vegetables!

I Spy the Healthy Choice

1st & 2nd Grades

Not all food and drinks are created equal! Learning to recognize healthy foods is the foundation of growing a healthy body and avoiding preventable illness. In the I Spy the Healthy Choice workshop students identify the nutritious foods and discover why it’s important to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Students work together to make yummy nutritious recipes with their friends and will leave this workshop motivated to make healthy choices.

Nutrition in the Garden

1st & 2nd Grades

Seeds, roots, shoots, flowers, and fruits—the plant parts growing in the garden are good for you! In the Nutrition in the Garden workshop students inspect all dimensions of the garden, taking a closer look at the edible plant parts we eat. Engaging activities highlight the wonders of a variety of fruits and vegetables. Students prepare healthy recipes featuring the parts of plants and leave this workshop  understanding the many health benefits to be found in a garden.

Nutrition Superheroes

3rd & 4th Grades

What you eat can truly save your health! In the Nutrition Superheroes workshop students meet real-life nutrition superheroes from history and modern times who have used the superpowers of healthy foods to save lives and make the world a better place. Students learn what it takes to be their own nutrition superhero, practice the power of preparing delicious and nutritious foods, and will leave this workshop with a new enthusiasm for eating more fruits and vegetables.

Discovering Nutrients

3rd & 4th Grades

Nutrition science is barely 100 years old and nutrition scientists are still making new discoveries today. In the Discovering Nutrients workshop students chart the course of nutrition science pioneers through true stories from throughout history that lead to our current understanding of human nutrition today. Students prepare healthy recipes that contain the full symphony of nutrients and leave this workshop with an appreciation for whole foods and the human journey to discovering nutrients.

The Nutrition Rainbow

5th & 6th Grades

Green, orange, red and blue, colorful foods are good for you! In the Nutrition Rainbow workshop students explore the health benefits found in the colors of fresh fruits and vegetables. True stories from throughout history unlock the mysteries of the Nutrition Rainbow. Students learn to prepare delicious recipes featuring all the food color groups and will leave this workshop understanding the importance of eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables every day.

Nutrition & The Body

5th & 6th Grades

Good nutrition supports the healthy growth and maintenance of the body. In the Nutrition & the Body workshop students examine how what they eat impacts various parts of their body. Nutrition science stories and true tales reveal the importance of making healthy choices when it comes to food and drink. Students prepare healthy recipes featuring nutrients of special importance to various body systems and will leave this workshop prepared to make smart nutrition choices that support a healthy body.

Nutrition Mysteries

7th & 8th Grades

Disease and illness have perplexed people since the dawn of time, but nutrition scientists are solving some of these health mysteries. In the Nutrition Mysteries workshop students investigate some of the greatest nutrition mysteries through true stories and scientific evidence. Students discover how easy it is to prepare healthy tasty foods from simple ingredients and will leave this workshop with a greater grasp on how a healthy diet can help prevent common chronic diseases.

Intro to Herbalism

7th & 8th Grades

Plants have been used as traditional medicinals and to support wellness throughout human history. In the Intro to Herbalism workshop students explore the tradition of plant-based remedies throughout time while becoming aquaninted with the safest herbs used to support people in sickness and in health. Students will prepare simple herbal recipes using easy-to-find ingredients and will leave this workshop better able to use plants for common ailments and in support of every-day-wellness.

Intro to Holistic Health

7th & 8th Grades

Holistic health considers the whole person—mind, body, spirit, and emotions—in the quest for wellness. In the Intro to Holistic Health workshop students explore the foundations of wellness within a holistic framework. 

Health science stories weave with traditional wisdom to reveal real strategies for maintaining wellness. Students work together to prepare healthy recipes and leave this workshop with new skills for holistic self care.

The Second Goldrush: How gold, nutrition, and oranges shaped the West includes story-time, demonstration, and recipe demonstration and tasting. 

Eat Smart for a Healthy Heart

February

Eat Smart for a Healthy Heart: Heart Health Awarness Month is February, includes engaging story-time, artery model, discussion, and recipe.

Nutrition Science for Skeletons

October

Nutrition Science for Skeletons: How nutrition and physical activity build strong bones for life with story time, demo, and seasonal recipe.

Give Thanks for the Garden

November

Give Thanks for the Garden: A Thanksgiving Nutrition Story: How human nutrition spurred the first Thanksgiving after gardens saved the lives of pilgrims during the Age of Exploration, includes demonstration and recipe.

Nutrition on the Brain

Anytime

Nutrition on the Brain: How what you eat affects your brain's ability and health, with engaging story time, demo, discussion, and recipe.

Nutrition and the Body

Anytime

Nutrition and the Body: Overview of how nutrition impacts different body systems including digestion, bones, eyes, skin, and brains with mini stories, demo, discussion, and recipe.

Weird Nutrition Science

Anytime

Weird Nutrition Science: Engaging nutrition science demos show students what too much salt does to their insides, a close-up look at the iron in cereal, how much fat is in common snack foods, and how food can clog your blood’s passageways. This is a demo/experiment focused workshop with time for discussion and recipe.


Parent/Teacher/Workplace Workshops

Live or virtual presentations include nutrition science, practical tips, and a healthy recipe demonstration.

Nutrition Hacks for Parents

Parents have the power to help their children develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Reya Steele Andrews for a presentation geared towards parents of school-age children. Reya will share 20 simple nutrition hacks parents can use to optimize their child's nutrition and wellness.

Eat Smart for a Healthy Heart

Heart disease is the leading cause of preventable disease today, but it doesn't have to be. Join Reya Steele Andrews for a presentation of the science demonstrating that cardiovascular disease is preventable and reversible with a whole-food, plant-based diet.
